Building Ossett Better Community Interest Company

Building Ossett Better is a Community Interest Company interested in promoting Ossett and creating a vibrant, prosperous town and community spirit.

Our History so far.....

Building Ossett Better (BOB) Community Interest Company was originally set up as Building Ossett Business by its founder Mark Ellerker in 2010.  The intention was to bring together business owners in Ossett town centre to work together to put on events that attracted both residents and visitors. The group arranged a number of events including BOB goes to Market, BOB goes to the Theatre and a BOB Treasure Hunt. They also worked alongside and supported other Ossett community groups and organsations on a number of Ossett focused activities including Flock to Ossett and the Olympic Rings World record attempt. In December 2012 BOB put on a Festive Feature event with a children’s choir, ukulele minstrels and brass band to coincide with a late night shopping opportunity in Ossett town centre.  In the latter part of 2012 the group began to expand its membership to include Ossett residents, representatives from Ossett based organisations, societies and clubs and the wider business community. Consequently, the name of the group was changed to reflect both its evolving membership base and its developing remit.

A new era

In February 2013 Building Ossett Better Community Interest Company (BOB CIC) was formed as a social enterprise organisation.  Its intention is to create a vibrant town, through working with other partners, and reinvesting time and money back into the Ossett economy and community. Expanding its membership has resulted in BOB CIC working on a number of interesting projects and initiatives, including the development of a town centre herb trail, led by Incredible Edible Wakefield and in partnership with Ossett Girl Guides, Ossett Academy, Wakefield Council and local graphic designer Tony Shephard - all BOB members.  A schedule of events and initiatives is currently being developed for the remainder of 2013 and 2014. BOB has also taken the opportunity to take over the licence from Wakefield Council to operate a Yorkshire Food and Craft market on the last Saturday of the month (February to November) between 10:00 – 16:00 in front of Ossett Town Hall. Throughout 2013, markets have taken place each month and have been accompanied by activities such as a town centre treasure trail, a classic car show, maypole dancing, and a variety of musical performances. All Yorkshire Food and Craft markets will be accompanied by entertainment to encourage visitors to attend the market and stay in the town centre to visit the wide range of independent shops. Building Ossett Better CIC intends to attract visitors from outside the town and get them to ‘BOB along… every last Saturday in the month to the Yorkshire Food and Craft market in Ossett’.

“Building Ossett Better CIC is in its infancy as an organisation, and all those associated with it are in for the long game. We are taking small steps to ensure that we have firm foundations upon which we can build. By developing projects and initiatives that are financially sound, such as the monthly Saturday market venture, and reinvesting any income into events that enhance the social and cultural wellbeing of Ossett residents we can ensure that Ossett continues to be a buoyant and attractive place to live, shop and visit"    John Whiteman, Chair Building Ossett Better CIC

Building Ossett Better CIC seeks funding from external sources for its own and a number of joint projects that will benefit the wider Ossett community and encourage economic, social and cultural wellbeing. Any residents, businesses, groups or organisations interested in supporting Ossett related projects, activities and initiatives can join Building Ossett Better CIC by sending their details to buildingossettbetter@hotmail.co.uk.
